Songwriting Tip of the Day: Generating Song Titles From Famous Paintings
Here is an idea for generating lots of prospective song titles:
Get a book of paintings from a famous artist, such as Van Gogh. (There are plenty at your public library) For each painting, write down 10 titles that relate thereto. So, for instance, if the subject of the painting is a sailboat going under a bridge, you might write "Bridges and Boats" This might lead to "Fridges and Floats" or even "Bridges and Moats."
Perhaps your first idea might have been "Under the Bridge." But, wait, you ask, "Isn't that a Red Hot Chili Peppers song?" Well, yes it is. But no worries, song titles are not subject to copyright law regulations. That means you could write your own song called "Under the Bridge" and not be in violation of the law. However, I suggest trying to be original.
You may even try to invert the original concept you came up with. So, for instance, instead of "Sailing Under the Bridge" you could change it to the rather interesting title of "Sailing Over the Bridge."
A great title is something that is really different, but with some familiarity to it. That's all for now! Go forth and create!
